Rent help in San Jose: the Homelessness Prevention System and what to do first
Rent in San Jose does not leave much room for a bad month. One cut shift, one car repair, one sick week — and the rent is short. If that is where you are, there is a system built for exactly this moment, and the biggest mistake people make is finding it too late.
The first call: (408) 516-5100
The Homelessness Prevention System (HPS) is Santa Clara County’s front door for rent help. It exists for people who are housed now but at risk of losing their housing in about the next 14 days — can’t pay the upcoming rent, got an eviction notice, home has become unsafe. It offers temporary financial assistance, legal support, and case management, coordinated by Sacred Heart Community Service with the County Office of Supportive Housing and Destination: Home, through 19 local nonprofits.
Three things people get wrong about it:
- It is for before, not after. Prevention money is meant to keep you housed. Call when the rent is about to be missed, not after the lockout.
- Nobody asks about immigration status. No information about it is collected, and citizenship is not required.
- It is one call into a network. The pre-screening (an interview and short questionnaire, about 1–2 hours) routes you through the 19-agency network — you do not have to knock on nineteen doors.
The income guideline is low-income under federal rules — about $159,550 for a household of four — which in this county reaches a lot of working families who assume they “make too much” for help.
The second call: your ZIP code’s agency
Rent and deposit help also runs through the Emergency Assistance Network, one agency per ZIP: Sunnyvale Community Services (408-738-4321) in Sunnyvale, West Valley Community Services (408-956-6110) in the west valley, Community Services Agency (650-968-0836) in Mountain View, South County Compassion Center (408-842-6662) in Gilroy, and Sacred Heart Community Service at 1381 S. First Street in San Jose.
If there is a notice or a court paper
Call the City of San Jose Eviction Help Center, (408) 975-4444, and the Law Foundation’s Housing Program, (408) 280-2424 — both free. And if the worst happens and you need a bed tonight, the Here4You hotline, (408) 385-2400, makes shelter placements across the county.
What to do today
- If rent day is coming and the money isn’t: (408) 516-5100.
- If there’s a notice: the two legal numbers above, today.
- Then run the checker — CalFresh, CARE/FERA, and cash aid can free up hundreds a month so next month’s rent is not another emergency: /check/?start=1
