Is this really free? — Yes. San Jose Benefits is a free community resource. Applying to the programs listed is always free at the official sites.
Do you apply for me, or do I apply myself? — We prepare and guide — you always submit your own application to the agency or organization running the program. We never ask for your Social Security number or bank details.
I was denied Medi-Cal or lost my coverage. Now what? — Read the notice first: the most common causes are a renewal that never got completed or a missing document, and both are fixable — if you lost coverage over a renewal, you get a 90-day cure period to finish it and get covered again. California DID expand Medi-Cal, your children qualify at much higher incomes than adults, and pregnancy coverage was never frozen. Call the county Medi-Cal line, 408-758-3600, or run the checker to see your route.
How do I know these programs are real and up to date? — Every listing was verified against the organization’s own website or office in October 2026. If you find something out of date, use the “Report a problem” link on that program’s page.
Do I need an account or sign-up? — No. The checker and the directory are free with no account. We only ask for your email if you want your guide or the newsletter sent to you.
What happens after I fill out Apply for Me? — A person reads your answers, builds your personal guide — the programs in order, who to call, and what to bring — and emails it to you free. We never ask for your Social Security number or bank details.
I’m a veteran. Where do I start? — Start with the free help: the Santa Clara County Office of Veterans Services — (408) 918-4980, 68 N. Winchester Blvd, Santa Clara — helps with VA claims at no charge, and the San Jose VA Clinic ((408) 574-9100, 5855 Silver Creek Valley Place) is the local VA care door. Never pay a firm before you’ve used the free help. Our Veterans category pulls the local doors together.
Can I get help if I’m not a U.S. citizen? — Some programs on this site do not ask about immigration status at all — the Homelessness Prevention System collects no information about it, and food distributions don’t ask. State and federal benefits have their own rules, which each program page states as the organization states them. Two facts worth knowing: children and pregnant people can get full-scope Medi-Cal regardless of immigration status, and U.S. citizen children can qualify for programs like CalFresh even when a parent cannot. When in doubt, call the program and ask — asking never costs anything. This site is not legal advice; for immigration questions, the Immigration Legal Services listing in our directory ((408) 468-0100) is a free local door.
I need help today, not this week. — Food: Second Harvest’s Food Connection hotline (1-800-984-3663, Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–5 p.m.) can tell you the closest distribution open near you, or search the locator in our directory any hour. Shelter tonight: Here4You, (408) 385-2400. About to lose your housing: the Homelessness Prevention System, (408) 516-5100 — call before you fall behind, not after. And 2-1-1 (dial 2-1-1, any hour) can point you to help near you in your language.
Do you have this in Spanish or Vietnamese? — Yes. The whole site, checker included, switches to Spanish with the language toggle, and the checker and the top guides are also available in Vietnamese.
