Christmas Help in San Jose 2026: Holiday Food Boxes, Toys for Kids, and Sign-Ups That Close Early

The deadline is the story: most Christmas help programs in San Jose take sign-ups in October and November — and close when they fill, well before December 25. If your family will need help with food or gifts this Christmas, the time to register is now, not in December.

Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026. Here are the doors to try, in order.

1. Salvation Army Angel Tree — gifts for children

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program matches children with donors who buy new clothing and toys from each child’s wish list. The Silicon Valley Salvation Army runs the local program from San Jose.

  • Families typically register in October and November — and the Salvation Army notes that many sign-ups have already started.
  • To learn this year’s dates and eligibility for your family, call the Family Services Department: (408) 282-1165 ext. 3212.
  • Ask on the call: which documents to bring, the age range for children, and when and where gift pickup happens.

Do not wait for a December announcement. By December, registration is over — distribution is what happens then.

2. Sacred Heart Community Service — holiday food boxes and toys

Sacred Heart Community Service, 1381 S. First St, San Jose

Sacred Heart is aiming to share 8,000 holiday food boxes and 18,000 toys, bikes, and books with families across Santa Clara County this season. It is one of the largest holiday efforts in the county.

What to do:

  • Check Sacred Heart’s holiday page — sacredheartcs.org/holidays26 — for this season’s family sign-up details, and go in person to 1381 S. First St if you need help signing up.
  • Go early in the season. A goal of 8,000 boxes sounds big until you remember how many families in this county need one.

3. Food for the holiday table — and every week

A Christmas dinner is one meal. If money is short in December, it helps to line up food support that runs all month:

  • Food Connection hotline: 1-800-984-3663 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.) — Second Harvest of Silicon Valley’s multilingual line (English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and more). They will find free grocery distributions near your ZIP code and can help you apply for CalFresh.
  • CalFresh benefits arrive on an EBT card you use at the grocery store — real help for the whole holiday season, not just one day.

For people who want to give

Both programs run on donations, and both are asking now:

  • Sacred Heart is collecting food, new unwrapped toys, and funds at 1381 S. First St; its holiday page lists a December 14 donation deadline for the season.
  • The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree invites individuals and groups to adopt an “Angel” tag and shop for a child — call (408) 282-1165 for how to give.

Note: as of our October 2026 check, the Salvation Army’s Silicon Valley page had not posted exact 2026 Angel Tree registration dates — it directs families to call Family Services for dates and eligibility, which is why the phone call, not a web form, is step one.
